These are places where people who have been arrested, are detained or convicted. These people are held under the criminal justice authority. Correctional facilities have the goal of reforming people from criminal behaviors to socially acceptable behavior. It is important to understand the context and types of criminal behaviors. This means understanding the motive of criminal behavior; that is focusing on the WHY? Factor. Some people commit crimes by choice; for example, a man can kill his lover after being rejected out of anger or jealousy. The man had other options including walking away but he chose to kill the woman. While we have other people who commit crimes under circumstantial pressure; this means that committing crimes is not a matter of choice but necessity; for example, a woman who engages in prostitution so that her children can have basic needs including daily meals. One’s motive of crime does not excuse anyone from paying the price for their crimes. Understanding the motive of crime will help to develop a treatment plan and a course work for training. Due to the sociopathy of criminal behavior; social stigma, discrimination, condemnation are common from society towards people who have criminal records. Nonetheless, it is important to give these people a second chance in life to make amendments and become a contributive member of society. These people need as much support as possible including through collaboration between the correctional facility and training; as the three parties can work towards rehabilitation and reintegration of the people with criminal records back to society.
